Vernel Smith was born and raised in Haines City where he spent most of his formative years. He is a class of 2000 graduate from Haines City High School. Vernel received his Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration from Barry University as well as a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. Vernel and Markeishia are the proud parents of 3 boys ages 10, 14, and 19. He is currently a residential and commercial real estate agent.
Vernel has a proven history in leadership and an unmatched passion for those who protect and serve our community. As a former deputy with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Vernel is the embodiment of service with integrity, compassion, accountability, and professionalism. Vernel is also a former district manager of a fortune 500 restaurant, where he managed vast territories and handled robust economic budgets. His prior work experience has equipped him to handle the city’s budget and ensure that the city makes decisions that are fiscally responsible. Vernel is a community leader. As a former youth athletics coach, he has fostered positive teachings and instilled a determination to never give up in the lives of the youth he coached.
Vernel is a graduate of the 2022 Northeast Chamber Adult Leadership Class XII. The experience centered on bringing together a group of informed, proactive, talented, and resourceful leaders to take initiative in community involvement. Together they toured the county and visited businesses in the agricultural, industrial, tourism industries, local and county government and more. It has been a lifelong goal for Vernel to serve his community. If given the opportunity he will work to create a brighter Haines City.
